Today we share the story of Matias (29), a world traveler, freelance writer and Project Manager (PM) at Copypanthers. He tells us how he has managed to live a life that’s simply  “everything he ever wanted”.

Far, far away

Matias journey started in a country far, far away. When he was only 1,5 years old he left Chile and took his first flight together with his mother and headed for Sweden. Several years later he still travels and is currently based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Being a relatively fresh Panther, Matias sees the endless opportunities that come with being a freelance writer.

“Variety is important in whatever I do.”

“I always get restless and variety is important in whatever I do. After I studied freelance journalism in Valparaiso, Chile I felt that I was onto something. When I returned to Oslo I decided to give my writing a chance to develop and bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok. My only plan was to write and travel. It’s what I love to do. Copypanthers allows me to make a living doing what I love.”

Matias has since then traveled all over Asia, writing and working along the way. He works from his home in Phnom Penh and has been for the latest months. 

“I got tired of traveling after I spent a couple of weeks on a motorbike, going from the north of Vietnam all the way down. I don’t consider myself a travel writer; I’m a traveling writer. Everything with words fascinates me and I love the fact that I can devote myself to my passion, wherever in the world I happen to be. After Vietnam I decided to take some time off and headed to a place where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. Cambodia is awesome. And crazy. Crazy Awesome. Of course I brought Copypanthers with me.”

“Going all-in and quit my day job”

Cambodia is now the place in Asia where Matias has spent most of his time. He remembers when he started writing for Copypanthers and the feeling of being able to live of his writing.

“I was handed a couple of projects and even though they were about dog- and parakeet food it was fun to work with words again. I had been working as an English teacher and even though it was rewarding it wasn’t my passion. I like words. I like writing. When the Copypanthers gig came along I did everything I could to make it work. After a while I took the decision to go all-in and quit my day job. I now spend my days writing short stories, articles, web-content and managing my writers all over the world. It’s everything I ever wanted.”

Matias now makes a living working as a freelance writer and works as a PM at Copypanthers. He’s been doing several different projects and sees himself continuing writing for years to come.

“I spend the early hours of my days finishing up texts and projects for Copypanthers. The rest I devote to my own writing, meeting people, working out or planning the next trip. I like the fact that I get paid for the hours I put in, it makes it easier for me to plan my day and fit in everything I want. Living in Cambodia is cheap and I live a pretty simple life. I’m happy if I can spend time writing and exploring the world. I can do that with only a couple of hours a day with Copypanthers.”

“I’m glad that I can put my language skills to work. I speak and write Swedish, Spanish, English and my Khmer is improving everyday. This job fits my lifestyle. When I move around I just tell my colleagues that I need a couple of days off, even a week or two. I have the same dialogue with my writers. If they are traveling, need some vacation, are sick or need to study extra that’s no problem. I have daily chats with my writers in China, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Chile, and Brazil… The list goes on. The only thing you need to have is a computer, like to write and have the motivation to be your own boss. Live wherever you want, don’t limit yourself. Working online has changed my life for the better and it will continue to do so. This is only the beginning”
