Kadiköy is a district in Istanbul on the Asian side of the city. It is the one of the many “centers” of Istanbul. Despite being a center, it is sometimes over looked by tourists, as they tend to opt for the European side of the city with the main attractions: Sultanahmet, Taksim, Beyoğlu, etc. being located there. However, Kadikoy offers a respite from the chaotic and
kalabalık (crowded) lifestyle that is Istanbul. Despite being a center and busy itself, there are many side streets for exploring, many little parks, and spectacular sea-side views!
Chalcedon – an ancient city of its own
Istanbul was not always Istanbul and Kadiköy was not always a district of this mega metropolis. Kadiköy was once its own city known as Chalcedon to the Greeks who founded it around 685 B.C., about 20 years earlier than Byzantium, 667 B.C. It was called the city of the blind because the denizens must have been blind to somehow not see the value of the “Golden Horn” (where Byzantium was built). Chalcedon fell to the Turks about a century ( in 1353) before Constantinople did in 1453. During the times of the Ottomans, this city was typically cosmopolitan; having Turks, Armenians, Greeks, Jews, and others. The variety of people living there have left their mark on the district as there are many churches of many denominations and synagogues that dot the neighborhood today.
A modern, fun place to be
If you get the chance to visit, you will not be let down. Even though the Asian side has a stigma as being boring and not offering as many attractions as the European side of the city, there are lots of great places to see, eat and shop at. Prices are notably lower, and because it is not as touristy as other sections of the city, you will not be hassled by the many vendors and maitre d’s trying to get your hard earned money. Kadiköy is well worth a visit, there are many pedestrian streets, a nostalgic tram, old buildings, mosques, and churches, and many great places for a beer or a sea-side view. Come to Kadiköy, you will be glad that you did.
